This new edition of the African Studies Companion Online brings together a wide range of sources of information in the African studies field. It builds on four previous editions of the African Studies Companion, the award winning publication initiated by Hans Zell. Published in print and online until 2005, this new edition is published electronically only.

The current edition is not finished yet. Completed and substantially added to are the sections on guides and resources for African languages, cartographic resources, map sales and vendors, guides to film and video resources, journals and magazines, news sources for Africa, the African press, African studies library collections and repositories throughout the world, major academic and national archives in Africa, centres of African studies and African studies programmes worldwide, and awards and prizes in African studies (over 1500 entries).

Other sections are covered insofar as referenced to from the completed areas (over 200 entries). They concern general online resources on Africa and African studies, major general reference tools, current bibliographies, indexing and abstracting services, major biographical resources, guides to statistical sources, Africanist documentation, publishers and distributors of African studies lists, major international organizations, foundations, donors, government and aid agencies, African studies societies and associations, online forums and mailing lists, and information and communication development in Africa. These sections will be completed in 2013.
