Q: How far back will the archive go ?
A: The archive goes back to Volume 1, Issue 1 for most journals and will include all content published up to the year 2000. Therefore, Brill defines archival content as journal issues with a publication date pre-2000.

Q: What will it cost ?
A: The fee for accessing the Brill Journal Archive Online is included in the subscription price. Subscribers  will automatically have full access to the archival content of all journals currently subscribed to, and will continue to have access to archival content for as long as active subscriptions are maintained.
Purchase options for the whole collection or subject-specific collections are also available.  The purchase option offers perpetual access.

Q: How can we request a quotation for the purchase option ?

Q: Can we purchase archival issues of journals we are not currently subscribing to ?
A: The pay-per-view option for archival articles is the same as for current content.

Q: Will the archives of any titles be added at a later stage ?
A: The complete archive of most Brill journals will be available by 2008. Back files of journals taken over recently, may be added in the course of 2008.

Q: Is Brill including archival content for titles you have taken over from other publishers ?
A: Brill will seek rights for archival issues, but we cannot guarantee this.

Q: If Brill sells a journal to another publisher, what archival access rights will we have?
A: Brill will seek to make access arrangements with the new publisher, but cannot guarantee access under the subscription model. If the archive has been purchased, Brill can provide a removable disk with the back files.

Q: How will Brill ensure that the archive of Brill’s journals will remain available ?
A: Brill has a third party archiving arrangement with the Royal Dutch Library (Koninklijke Bibliotheek) and Portico (USA), to ensure that continuous access to the digital back files will be available and accessible.

Q: Will we have perpetual access, even if we stop subscribing to a Brill journal title ?
A: In line with Brill’s archival policy for current content, Brill grants perpetual access to all subscribed volumes, published since 2000. However, access to the archival content (pre-2000) will be disabled after cancelling a subscription.

Q: Where will we be able to access the journal archive ?
A: All journals are hosted on IngentaConnect.

Q: Will the archival issues appear alongside our other Brill journal content on IngentaConnect?
A: Yes, so users will have access to current issues and archival issues at the same time

A: Yes, we will continue to offer access to online Brill journal content via journal gateways, including SwetsWise, EBSCONET, etc.

Q. How can I subscribe to (online) journals and the Brill Journal Archive Online?
A. Brill journals (including imprints Martinus Nijhoff Publishers and VSP) are available as print+e or e-only versions. From 2010 a print-only version is also available. The following journal is not available online: Science of Religion

Q. Can I purchase a single article?
A. Individual articles from our journals are not available in print.
However, you can purchase individual online articles (if available). Please go to our online journals page and select the journal issue in question by browsing and then select the article that you wish to obtain. When clicking on “view” you will be guided through the purchasing process.

Q. Are your online journals available for use at multi campus sites?
A. Access for remote users and a range of IP addresses are possible and acceptable to us for academic users.
Corporate subscribers who wish to obtain a multi-site license should contact our sales department for a detailed quotation.

Q. Is our institution allowed institution-wide access?
A. Institutional subscribers are allowed institution-wide access.
This user should register an IP range with Ingenta so that only employees who are accessing from workstations within this range gain access to the online journals and staff at the institute would automatically gain access to the subscriptions due to being IP authenticated.

Q. Is there an institutional site license that must be completed to gain access to the online versions of Brill journals?
A. We do not have a license for institutional access. We use the standard terms and conditions offered by Ingenta, as we are hosted by Ingenta.
For the Brill Journal Archive Online, purchase option a license must be completed.

Q. To which volumes do I get online access when I take out a subscription?
A. With a subscription you get access to current content (published from year 2000) as well as archival content (all content published before year 2000).

Q. Do I keep online access when not renewing my subscription?
A. After canceling a subscription, you get perpetual access to the volumes you subscribed to from current content (i.e. content published from year 2000).

Q. What is your policy concerning individual subscription rates?
A. We have individual rates for the current volume of most of our journals. To qualify for reduced subscription prices for individuals, subscription orders from individuals must be ordered for a private address and must be paid for by an individual and may not be paid for by institutions or by organizations. Individual rate subscriptions do not include online access.

Q. What are your postage rates for journals?
A. All journals are sent by priority. Prices include shipping and handling costs.

Q. Is pre-payment required?
A. Please note that in case of a subscription pre-payment is required. Dispatch of issues and/or electronic access will commence only after correct payment has been received.

Q. Which volumes can I obtain through Brill?
Access to all online back files is included in active subscriptions.
Print versions of only the current year plus the two previous years are available from Brill, and can be ordered from the ordering address given above.

Q. What is your policy concerning claims of non receipt?
A. Claims for missing issues will be met, free of charge, if made within three months of dispatch for European customers and five months for customers outside Europe. In the year following publication, replacement copies may be purchased at the respective single issue prices.

Q. What is Brill’s policy regarding inter-library loan (ILL) and article output/copying?
A. Brill grants libraries the right to use articles from journals to which the library has a subscription as source material for interlibrary loans subject to the following conditions:
The interlibrary loan request comes from an academic or other non-commercial, non-corporate research library located in the same country as the subscribing library.
The purpose of the request is research or private study and not commercial use.
The subscribing library shall not honor requests from for profit companies or directly from individuals.
The subscribing library sends the requested article to the requesting library by post or fax or secure transmission, using Ariel or its equivalent, whereby the electronic file is deleted immediately after printing.
The subscribing library shall not advertise the possibility of making interlibrary loans.
