A peer reviewed* series of “state-of-the-field” handbooks to provide up-to-date surveys of themes, persons, movements, currents, events in European History from 400 to the present. Written by the foremost specialists in the respective fields, they aim to provide full balanced accounts, as well as synthesis of debate and the state of scholarship in 8-15 substantial chapters. Volumes are in English (contributions from continental scholars are translated) . Volumes are constructed on broadly the same pattern: a small number of narrative chapters to update to introduce and update the recent historiography and a larger number of thematic chapters. The need for such works lies in the fact than many broader high-level surveys appeared as monographs and have not been updated or replaced over 20-30 years, or have been published in languages other than English. Handbooks are normally multi-author volumes, tightly orchestrated with an initial editorial plan down to chapter level.
