Brill’s Policies on Open Access
In principle all Brill’s publications are protected by copyright. With Brill Open, authors are offered the option to make their article publicly and freely online available against an article publication charge. With some journals these charges are reduced or waived. In addition, under certain conditions Brill allows the posting of publications in online repositories and open archives (self-archiving). All options are explained below.
With Brill Open, authors are offered the option to make their publication publicly online available in exchange for an Article Publication Charge (APC). The Brill Open option enables authors to comply with specific Open Access requirements from their research funding body or their university or organization.
The Brill Open option is available for all journals published under the imprints Brill and Martinus Nijhoff. In 2013 the APC is EURO 2,000 / USD 2,800 per article, excluding applicable taxes. More information on the payment of the APC is available upon request rights [at] brill [dot] com.
Brill Open articles and journals will be made publicly accessible on Brill’s online content platform, (booksandjournals.brillonline.com), under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Unported License. The special Brill Open Consent to Publish can be downloaded here: brillopen-consent-to-publish.pdf.
The Brill Open option will be made available to authors only upon acceptance of their paper for publication. This is in order to prevent any potential conflict of interests, and to ensure that authors' funder requirements have no influence on the editorial peer review and decision-making. Those authors who do not wish to use this service are under no pressure to do so, and their accepted article will be published in the usual manner (except for the full Open Access journals listed below). All existing policies on author posting of the final version will then apply (see under Self-Archiving below).
We accept that Open Access is a valid alternative for the traditional subscription model. Therefore it is Brill’s intent to reflect a journal’s APC income in the development of the journal’s subscription price.
In addition to the Brill Open option for articles, in 2013 the following six journals are being made fully available in Open Access:
- African Diaspora *
- Bijdragen tot de Land-, Taal- en Volkenkunde / Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences of Southeast Asia and Oceania (new at Brill in 2013) **
- Fascism *
- Indo-European Linguistics (new in 2013)
- The International Journal of the Platonic Tradition*
- New West Indian Guide / Nieuwe West-Indische Gids (new at Brill in 2013) **
* Because of the generous support of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research NWO, for 2013 the APC for this journal is reduced to EUR 1,200 / USD 1,680 per article.
** This journal is fully sponsored by the learned society Vereniging KITLV (NL), therefore the APC is waived.
Under certain conditions Brill allows the posting of publications in online repositories and open archives (self-archiving). The following is allowed, always with proper acknowledgement to Brill and the original publication:
Permitted use of Articles from Journals, Multi-Authored Books and Encyclopedias
- A Brill author may post the post-print version of his or her own article that appeared in a journal or multi-authored book volume or encyclopedia on his or her own personal website or webpage free of charge. This means the article can be shown exactly as it appears in print. No permission is required.
- The institute employing the author may post the post-refereed, but pre-print version of that article free of charge on its website. The post-refereed, pre-print version means the version which contains all adaptations made after peer reviewing (upon acceptance). The publisher’s lay-out must not be used.
Permitted use of Monographs
- The institute employing the monograph author may post the post-refereed, but pre-print version of the book free of charge in a repository on its Intranet (closed repository). The post-refereed, pre-print version means the version which contains all adaptations made after peer reviewing (upon acceptance). However, the publisher’s lay-out must not be used.
- Without permission, the posting of (part of) books in any form in an open repository or otherwise on the Internet is not allowed. For permissions contact rights [at] brill [dot] com
