Biographical note
Gerrit Knaap (1954) studeerde geschiedenis in Utrecht en promoveerde daar in 1985 op een eerdere versie van dit boek. Hij publiceerde onder meer Shallow waters, rising tide: Shipping and trade in Java around 1775 (1996) en Cephas, Yogyakarta: Photography in the service of the Sultan (1999). Samen met Ger Teitler redigeerde hij de bundel De Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie tussen oorlog en diplomatie (2002).
