J.G. Manning is the William Kelly and Marilyn Milton Simpson Professor of History and Classics at Yale University, and a Senior Research Scholar at Yale Law School. Before coming to Yale in 2008, Manning taught for many years at Stanford University and before then at Princeton. He took his A.M. and Ph.D. at the Oriental Institute in The University of Chicago. His primary interests include, broadly, the economic and legal history of the premodern world, Egyptian history in the long run, and the Hellenistic Mediterranean, and particularly the interaction of Greek and non-Greek institutions and connections of the Mediterranean to central Asia and the Indian Ocean. His current projects include a general survey of the last 25 years of scholarship on the ancient economy, the comparative bureaucratic history of Egypt and China, and comparative premodern legal systems. The last project is part of a major initiative with Cambridge University Press on Comparative premodern legals systems worldwide.
Juan Carlos Moreno García, PhD (1995, École Pratique des Hautes-Études, Paris), Habilitation (2009), is a CNRS Senior Researcher at the University Paris IV-Sorbonne. He has published extensively on pharaonic administration, cultural change and socio-economic history and has directed several research projects as well as organized several conferences on these topics. He is the author and editor of several volumes: Études sur l’administration, le pouvoir et l’idéologie en Égypte, de l’Ancien au Moyen Empire, Liège, 1997; Hwt et le milieu rural égyptien du IIIe millénaire. He is also the author of about 100 articles and chapters of books.
