2015 Frank Watson Book Prize

Subject area:

The Guelph Centre for Scottish Studies is delighted to announce that the Frank Watson Book Prize for 2015 has been awarded to Dr Allan Kennedy of the University of Manchester. The prize-winning book, Governing Gaeldom: The Scottish Highlands and the Restoration State, 1660-1688 (Northern World, Leiden: Brill, 2014), examines the Highlands in the reigns of Charles II and James VII and the complex relationships that existed between the state, the Highland elites, and the Highland people. One of the strengths of the book is its success in showing repeatedly that the Highlanders were far from a single political or cultural group in this period, and the dangers of ‎simplistic assumptions about their governance and attitude towards the state. In a large and impressive field of books that reminded the committee how robust our subject is, Dr Kennedy's work stood out. We congratulate him warmly, and are very pleased that he has accepted our invitation to attend our September Colloquium.
