Monographs are at the heart of Brill’s publication program. This is why Brill has been working on developing an Open Access book program that matches the strength and scope of our traditional book program. Currently we are at the forefront of Open Access book publishing, offering over 200 books in Open Access.

Brill Open Chapters

Brill offers the opportunity to publish individual chapters in Open Access (e.g. for articles in edited volumes).

Instead of the regular contributor’s copyright form, chapter authors who would like to publish in Open Access sign a special OA contributor’s license. Check out the licenses here

Brill Open Books

Brill offers authors the possibility to publish their monograph or edited volume in Open Access, so that it is freely available online immediately upon publication.

Authors pay a Book Publication Charge (BPC) and sign one of the Creative Commons-licenses that we offer. Check out the licenses here

If you are an author and interested to publish in Open Access, please get in touch with your acquisitions editor at Brill and indicate this at as early a stage as possible.


When a publication is the result of a research grant from e.g. the ERC, or a national research council, extra budget from the funder is often available to cover the publication charge. More information can be found here

What happens when the book is published:

·         The e-book will be available in Open Access immediately on the Brill Books and Journals platform

·         The e-book will be registered in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) and the OAPEN Library.
