It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death on 25 January of Ravil Bukharaev – author of Global Oriental’s The Story of Joseph (2010) and Tatarstan: A ‘Can-Do’ Culture (2007). Recognised and acclaimed as a literary giant (especially for his poetry) in his native Tatarstan, Ravil will be honoured with a state funeral in the capital, Kazan, on 3 February.  Author of more than thirty books, Ravil lived in London with his wife Lydia and worked for the BBC World Service (Russian service) for fifteen years, taking early retirement in 2009.  He quickly immersed himself in a wide variety of literary interests and  became a UNESCO ambassador promoting inter-cultural understanding. He was a remarkable man and a great spirit that touched many lives. He will be greatly missed.  Our deepest sympathies are extended to his wife Lydia, who is also a distinguished artist and writer.
