In 2013 Brill celebrates its 330thanniversary as academic publisher, making Brill the oldest publishing house in the Netherlands, and one of the oldest in the world. Its history goes back to 17 May 1683, when Jordaan Luchtmans established himself as a bookseller in Leiden. Five generations of the Luchtmans family served as “Printers to the University” until 1848, when Evert Jan Brill took over the firm, giving it his own name. This year also commemorates an equal division in time; the Luchtmans and Brill names being associated with the firm for exactly 165 years each.
In an ever-changing world Brill has managed to adapt to circumstances and use the opportunities that came its way. Still, in all its metamorphoses, the firm steadfastly clung to its historical identity. Brill’s longevity is a remarkable story of both continuity and change.

Brill’s core publishing activities lie in specialized market niches in the humanities and international law and, to a restricted extent, in the sciences. The company supplies a wide range of high quality and professionally relevant literature to libraries and individual academics. Providing a service to authors and readers and to all those in the intermediate chain who are of importance is the core competence of Brill.
